A Call to Strengthen Critical Care at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital

Overview

We at the Ghana Doctors and Dentists Association UK (GDDA-UK) believe that access to high-quality healthcare is a fundamental human right. That’s why we are proud to announce our core fundraising project for the 2026-2027 cycle: the refurbishment and strengthening of the Intensive Care and High Dependency Units (ICU/HDU) at Efia Nkwanta Regional Hospital (ENRH) in Takoradi, Ghana.

The Current Challenge: The Need for Transformation

Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital is a critical medical lifeline for the Western Region. Its ICU/HDU team works tirelessly to save lives. However, the current physical condition of these vital units is holding back their potential. We have seen first-hand the challenges their dedicated staff face.

Currently, the entry point requires modernisation to create a proper sterile environment and controlled access. Inside, the waiting areas for families are inadequate and lack comfort during incredibly stressful times.

The clinical support spaces are also in urgent need of an overhaul:

  • The medicine and supply storage area needs reorganisation and better inventory management solutions.

  • Clinical workstations require ergonomic updates and integrated technology to improve efficiency.

  • Staff changing areas lack basic privacy and sanitation.

Furthermore, critical patient privacy is an issue; currently, spaces are divided only by simple curtains. This is simply not enough for patients fighting for their lives.

You can see the current state for yourself in the video.

This infrastructure gap limits the complexity of care that can be delivered. It puts undue stress on staff and prevents patients from receiving the most optimal outcomes. The people of Takoradi and the surrounding regions deserve better.

The GDDA-UK Vision: A Modern Center for Critical Care

Our goal is simple but ambitious: to transform these outdated spaces into a modern, fully equipped, and resilient ICU/HDU. Our refurbishment project will focus on:

1. A Complete Architectural Overhaul: Replacing existing structures with modern, cleanable surfaces to enhance infection control. This includes creating individual, private glass-partitioned patient bays.

2. Expanding Capacity: Strategically redesigning the layout to increase the number of ICU and HDU beds available to the community.

3. Advanced Medical Technology: Procuring and installing new ventilators, patient monitors, infusion pumps, and specialised ICU beds.

4. Optimised Workflow and Support Areas: Building dedicated, efficient medicine dispensaries, ergonomic nursing stations, and professional staff support areas.

5. A Compassionate Environment: Designing modern, comfortable waiting and consultation rooms for patient families.

6. Sustainable Infrastructure: Ensuring reliable power and oxygen systems to support life-saving equipment 24/7.

A renewed unit won’t just look better; it will allow clinicians to treat more patients, increase survival rates for complex conditions, and provide a safer environment for everyone. It will provide the necessary foundation to deliver on the mission of critical care.

Care, Share, Inspire: How You Can Help

We can only make this transformation possible with your help. Our theme for this fundraiser is “Care, Share, Inspire.” We believe that collectively, we can ignite a movement for change.
